US Holiday On October 18 2018?

The following is a compilation of American federal holidays, federal observances, state holidays and other common patriotic and national observances and commemorations that apply to the United States during Thursday, 2018-10-18:

  • National School Lunch Week - Day 5:

[pro] This year National School Lunch Week starts on Sunday, October 14 2018 and ends on Saturday, October 20 2018. In 1946 (72 years ago) President Harry Truman signed the National School Lunch Act, which provided meals for over 7 million children in its first year. By joint resolution approved October 9, 1962, the Congress designated the week beginning on the second Sunday of October in each year as "National School Lunch Week"and authorized and requested the President to issue a proclamation in observance of this week. According to a recent presidential proclamation,

More than 30 million children depend on the National School Lunch Program for daily nutrition, and more than 13 million children are able to start their school day with a full stomach because of the School Breakfast Program. For many young people, these programs are the only regular source of food. That is why it is more important than ever to strengthen them and make sure they are supporting healthy lifestyles in classrooms across America. During National School Lunch Week, we encourage schools to expand access to nutritious food options, and we salute all those who work in our Nation's school cafeterias and food preparation centers.

  • Ohio Mammography Day:

[oh-sp] The month of October is designated as "Ohio Breast Cancer Awareness Month," and the third Thursday of each October is designated as "Ohio Mammography Day," to promote the importance of identifying breast cancer in its earliest stages.

It is a paid holiday for state employees. The official celebration is held in Sitka, where schools release students early, many businesses close for the day, and events such as a parade and reenactment of the flag raising are held.
