International Days August 9 2024 (United Nations)

The following is an overview of the days and the corresponding celebration declared by the United Nations that apply to Friday, 2024-08-09:

  • International Day of the World's Indigenous People:

In order to strengthen international cooperation for the solution of the problems faced by indigenous people in such areas as human rights, environment, development, education and health, the General Assembly of the United Nations in 2004 proclaimed a Second International Decade of the World's Indigenous People to be celebrated on every August 9th from 2005 – 2014, with the theme of "A Decade for Action and Dignity."
  • International Day of Solidarity with the Struggle of Women in South Africa and Namibia:

In South Africa, National Women's Day is celebrated in 1994 to commemorate a protest march organized by women in 1956 against the obligation of black citizens of carrying passes during the apartheid era. Taking this into account and expressing solidarity with the women of South Africa and Namibia, the United Nations General Assembly decided to commemorate each year on 9 August the International Day of Solidarity with the Struggle of Women in South Africa and Namibia.
