US Holiday On May 18 2024?

The following is a compilation of American federal holidays, federal observances, state holidays and other common patriotic and national observances and commemorations that apply to the United States during Saturday, 2024-05-18:

  • National Defense Transportation Week:

[fed-ob] [pro] The entire week on which the National Defense Transportation Day falls is observed as the National Transportation Week (NTW). It provides an opportunity for Americans to join together for greater awareness and appreciation of the transportation industry. Also, it celebrates the community of transportation professionals who keep our country on the move.
  • National Safe Boating Week - Day 1:

[fed-ob] Every year, the United States Coast Guard joins partners nationwide to raise awareness about boating responsibly. The goverment of the United States highlights that important work during National Safe Boating Week, and encourages all boaters to take appropriate precautions before casting off this season. In recognition of the importance of safe boating practices, the Congress, by joint resolution approved June 4, 1958 (36 U.S.C. 131), as amended, has authorized and requested the President to proclaim annually the 7-day period prior to Memorial Day weekend as "National Safe Boating Week."
  • National Police Week - Day 7:

[pro] This year National Police Week starts on Sunday, May 12 2024 and ends on Saturday, May 18 2024. The President is requested to issue each year a proclamation— (1) designating the week in which May 15 occurs as Police Week in recognition of the service given by men and women who stand guard to protect the people of the United States through law enforcement; and (2) inviting State and local governments and the people of the United States to observe Police Week with appropriate ceremonies and activities, including the display of the flag at halfstaff. According to the Presidential Proclamation (2015),
Each May, our Nation salutes the American women and men who put their lives on the line every day to maintain public safety and hold accountable those who break the law. On Peace Officers Memorial Day and during Police Week, we recognize all those who have dedicated their lives to this vital task. With heavy hearts, we mourn the heroes taken from us only because they chose to serve, and we rededicate ourselves to carrying forward their noble legacy.
  • National Women's Health Week - Day 7:

[pro] This week is a reminder to women to take care of themselves, and to make their health a priority. During this week organizations promote awareness, prevention, and educational activities that improve the health of women. According to the Presidential Proclamation (2015),
During National Women's Health Week, we reaffirm the belief that ensuring all women and girls have the opportunity to live full and healthy lives is vital to their success and to the prosperity of our Nation.
  • Armed Forces Day:

[pro] Armed Forces Day celebrates freedom and honors Americans serving in all of U.S. military branches (U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Air Force and U.S. Coast Guard) following the consolidation of the military services in the U.S. Department of Defense. This day also serves as an opportunity to commemorate the veterans and those who died in the service of the United States. Armed Forces Day is part of a week-long celebration of the military which starts on the the second Saturday in May. According to the Presidential Proclamation,
At the heart of our Nation is the idea that we are each endowed with certain unalienable rights. We hold this truth to be self-evident, but from the moment a small band of patriots first came together to declare independence, we have never believed it to be self-executing. From Lexington and Concord to Iraq and Afghanistan, brave women and men have fought to defend the blessings of liberty and freedom and to protect the way of life we cherish. On Armed Forces Day, we salute the unbroken chain of Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen who have continuously secured and renewed the promise of our Nation.
  • HIV Vaccine Awareness Day:

[nhas] May 18 is National HIV Vaccine Awareness Day, an annual observance to educate communities about the importance of preventive HIV vaccine research. A safe and effective vaccine would be the ultimate weapon in the HIV prevention arsenal. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases takes the lead role in organizing activities and promoting this day.

Notes:

[fed-ob] United States federal observances are days, weeks, months, or other periods designated by the United States Congress for the commemoration or other observance of various events, activities, or topics. These observances differ from Federal holidays in that Federal employees only receive a day free from work on holidays, not observances. Federal observances that are designated by Congress appear in Title 36 of the United States Code (36 U.S.C. § 101 et seq.).

[pro] This is a special day designated by presidential proclamation.

[nhas] Part of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy Awareness Days.
