International Days March 21 2025 (United Nations)

The following is an overview of the days and the corresponding celebration declared by the United Nations that apply to Friday, 2025-03-21:

  • International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination:

    Proclaimed in resolution A/RES/2142 (XXI) in 1966 by the United Nations General Assembly, and observed annually on March 21st, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is a call to the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination after the events in South Africa in 1960 where police opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration in Sharpeville.
  • World Poetry Day:

    [UNESCO] With the goal of promoting the reading, writing, publishing and teaching of poetry throughout the world and, as the UNESCO session declaring the day says, to "give fresh recognition and impetus to national, regional and international poetry movements", World Poetry Day, observed every year on March 21st, was declared by UNESCO in 1999.
  • International Day of Nowruz:

    In resolution A/RES/64/253, the General Assembly proclaimed 21 March as the International Day of Novruz at the request of several countries that celebrate Nowruz (New Year of the Persian calendar) such as Afghanistan, Albania, Azerbaijan, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Russian Federation, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Turkey.
  • World Down Syndrome Day:

    World Down Syndrome Day is observed on March 21. On this day, people with Down syndrome and those who live and work with them throughout the world organize and participate in activities and events to raise public awareness and create a single global voice for advocating for the rights, inclusion and well being of people with Down syndrome.
  • International Day of Forests:

    The International Day of Forests is a day to raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests, and trees outside forests, for the benefit of current and future generations. Activities that take place in support of this day include planting trees, photo gallery presentations, film presentations, among other social media outreach activities. The International Day of Forests was established by resolution 67/200 of the United Nations General Assembly on November 28, 2012. Before 2013, this day was previously called Forest Day.
