Month Calendar For United States Holidays February 2012

  • American Heart Month[fed-ob][pro]: American Heart Month is a month-long United States observance established by 36 U.S.C. § 101. The President is requested to issue each year a proclamation: (1) designating February as American Heart Month;(2) inviting the chief executive officers of the States, territories, and possessions of the United States to issue proclamations designating February as American Heart Month;and (3) urging the people of the United States to recognize the nationwide problem of heart and blood vessel diseases and to support all essential programs required to solve the problem. The Presidential Proclamation states that
In the United States, cardiovascular disease -- including heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure -- is responsible for one out of every three deaths. It is the number one killer of American women and men, and it is a leading cause of serious illness and disability. [...] Though usually preventable, heart disease can manifest itself in sudden and unforeseen ways, and it costs our Nation hundreds of billions of dollars annually. [...] By maintaining a healthy diet, getting regular exercise, and not smoking, you can control risk factors and help protect your heart.
  • National African American History Month[fed-ob][pro]: This year, 2012, as we mark the 36th year of National African American History Month, let us reflect on the sacrifices and contributions made by generations of African Americans. According to the Presidential Proclamation,
For too long, our most basic liberties had been denied to African Americans, and today, we pay tribute to countless good-hearted citizens -- along the Underground Railroad, aboard a bus in Alabama, and all across our country -- who stood up and sat in to help right the wrongs of our past and extend the promise of America to all our people. During National African American History Month, we recognize these champions of justice and the sacrifices they made to bring us to this point, we honor the contributions of African Americans since our country's beginning, and we recommit to reaching for a day when no person is judged by anything but the content of their character.
    • National Teen Dating Violence Awareness And Prevention Month[fed-ob][pro]: February is National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month (TDVAM). Its objective is to raise the awareness nationwide about teen dating violence and promote safe, healthy relationships. The Presidential Proclamation states that
Teen dating violence is a serious violation that can affect a young person's safety, development, and sense of comfort. Perpetrated by a current or past intimate partner, dating violence takes many forms, including physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, and can occur in person or through electronic communication and social media.
