  • New Year's Holiday Season:

    [gov] The Japanese New Year (正月 Shōgatsu) follows the Gregorian calendar and is celebrated every year on January 1. The New Year's Holiday Season is a week long period around that date starting on Dec 28th and ending on Jan 3rd during which many companies and goverment offices usually remain closed.

New Year's Day marks the beginning of Japan's most important holiday season, the New Year season (正月 Shōgatsu), which generally refers to the first one, three or seven days of the year. Although not prescribed by law, many workplaces are closed from December 29 to January 3. Prior to 1948, New Year's Day was a national holiday on which the imperial worship ceremony known as Shihō-hai (四方拝) took place.
