  • National Park Week - Day 5:

    [pro] Every year National Park Week is celebrated in the United States during the month of April. This year National Park Week runs from Saturday, April 15 2023 to Sunday, April 23 2023. It is a chance to hike, learn, share, get active and experience the powerful content knowledge, values, and skills embodied by our Nation’s remarkable cultural, natural, and recreational heritage. There are nearly 400 National Parks coast-to-coast! According to the Presidential Proclamation (2015),
    Our National Parks have allowed generations to discover history, nature, and wildlife in irreplaceable ways. From the highest peaks of Denali to the lowest dips of the Grand Canyon, families around our country enjoy the splendor of the outdoors. Throughout National Park Week, as we celebrate the ways in which our treasured outdoor spaces enrich our lives and uplift our spirits, the National Park Service will again offer free admission to America's National Parks so more people can explore our country's vast natural beauty.
  • Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial - 28th Anniversary:

    [ok-sp] The Oklahoma City bombing was a terrorist attack on April 19, 1995 executed by two Americans with militia training and strong antigoverment views. They packed a rental truck with explosives and detonated it in front of the nine-story Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. The explosion demolished a third of the building which contained regional offices for the Drug Enforcement Agency, the Secret Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives. Moreover, it damaged hundreds of other structures in 16 surrounding blocks, killed 168 people and injured 680 others. After its demolition in May 1995, the area of the federal building became a national memorial and museum that opened to the public. Before the September 11 terrorist attack, the Oklahoma City bombing was considered as the deadliest terrorist attack in the history of the United States. Every year on April 19, annual remembrance services are held at the same time of the day as the explosion occurred. City officials and relatives of the victims of the bombing gatherer to honor the dead and to celebrate the city's resilence.
  • Child Care Worker Appreciation Week in Ohio:

    [oh-sp] The week of the nineteenth day of April shall be designated as "Child Care Worker Appreciation Week in Ohio," to commemorate those child care workers who lost their lives in the bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building on April 19, 1995, and to increase public appreciation of child care workers in Ohio. As used in this section, "the week of the nineteenth day of April" means the seven-day period beginning on Sunday and ending on Saturday that includes the nineteenth day of April.
