The following is a compilation of American federal holidays, federal observances, state holidays and other common patriotic and national observances and commemorations that apply to the United States during Thursday, 2022-05-05:

  • National Day of Prayer:

[fed-ob][pro] The National Day of Prayer is an annual day of observance held on the first Thursday of May. Each year since its inception, the President has signed a proclamation, encouraging all Americans to "to turn to God in prayer and meditation"at churches, in groups, and as individuals. It has historical origins to a mandate by George Washington, the first president of the United States.
  • Teacher Appreciation Week - Day 4

    [pro]
  • National Charter Schools Week - Day 5:

[pro] National Charter Schools Week is an opportunity to highlight public charter school education throughout the country. The week is dedicated to celebrating the success of our charter students, teachers and administrators while raising awareness of the increasing demands placed on the schools. Charter schools receive government funding but operate independently of the established public school system in which they are located. Since 1994, the federal Charter Schools Program has provided charter schools with start-up and expansion grants and funding for school buildings. It is the only dedicated source of funding to support charter schools in the entire federal budget. According to the Presidential Proclamation (2015),
In today's global economy, a high-quality education is one of the best investments we can make in a child's future, and it is central to the promise that in America, where you start should not determine how far you can go. No matter who they are or where they come from, all children deserve the best education possible. During National Charter Schools Week, we recognize the role public charter schools play in providing America's daughters and sons with a chance to reach their fullest potential, and we recommit to strengthening our Nation's classrooms for all.
  • Cinco de Mayo:

This is a day of celebration for the Mexican community in the United States as they conmemorate the victory of May 5, 1862 of the Mexican army directed by General Ignacio Zaragoza over the French forces in the city of Puebla. In Mexico this day is called El Día de la Batalla de Puebla.

Notes:

[fed-ob] United States federal observances are days, weeks, months, or other periods designated by the United States Congress for the commemoration or other observance of various events, activities, or topics. These observances differ from Federal holidays in that Federal employees only receive a day free from work on holidays, not observances. Federal observances that are designated by Congress appear in Title 36 of the United States Code (36 U.S.C. § 101 et seq.).

[pro] This is a special day designated by presidential proclamation.
