First college basketball game

According to Official Guinness Records,

The first game of college basketball was between University of Iowa and University of Chicago (both USA), at Iowa City Armory, Iowa City, Iowa, USA, played on 18 January 1896.The University of Iowa invited the University of Chicago to play an experimental game of 5 v 5. Previous to this, games were typically played with between 7 and 9 players. The game finished Chicago 15, Iowa 12.
