The highest average speed by a train over a distance of 1,000 km (621 miles) is 306.37 km/h (190.37 mph), by a French SNCF TGV train between Calais and Marseille on 26 May 2001. The train, which was unmodified and therefore identical to Eurostar trains, covered the 1,067 km (663 miles) between the cities in 3 hours 29 minutes, reaching a maximum speed of 366 km/h (227 mph).
