The Thai Elephant Orchestra (TEO), based at the Thai Elephant Conservation Center in Lampang, Thailand, features up to 16 elephants. The orchestra was formed by Richard Lair and David Soldier (both USA) in 2000, with the aim of providing a recreational activity for retired working Asiatic elephants. The elephants improvise their own music on a variety of specially made percussion and wind instruments. Their songs, which have been likened to Thai temple music, are commercially available on three albums.
