Largest plate inserted in human skull

According to Official Guinness Records,

Tom Thompson (USA) had a titanium plate measuring 15 x 11 cm (5.9 x 4.33 in) inserted into the left side of his head by neurosurgeons at DeKalb General Hospital, Decatur, Georgia, USA on 30 April 1971. The surgery took place after he had been struck by a car and pronounced dead on arrival at the local hospital.
He graduated from high school in 1973 and later Southwest Texas State University, San Marcos, Texas in 1983. He currently is an assistant coach for the semi-professional American football team San Antonio Thunder.
