Lowest fuel consumption driving to 48 contiguous US States (diesel car)

According to Official Guinness Records,

The lowest fuel consumption rate for a car visiting all 48 contiguous US state is 2.89 liters per 100 km (97.49 UK mpg;81.17 US mpg), achieved by Wayne Gerdes and Bob Winger (both USA), driving a 2015 VW Golf TDI between 22 June and 7 July 2015. Wayne Gerdes and Bob Winger drove 13,498 km (8,387 miles), spending less than $300 on fuel.
