According to Official Guinness Records,

The most public votes received by a television programme belongs to the Season 11 finale of American Idol (produced by FremantleMedia North America, Inc. on the FOX network, USA) when 132,311,283 votes were cast by telephone, text messaging and online from viewers selecting the winner of the singing contest. The results, collected and validated by Telescope (USA), were received from 22-23 May 2012, with Phillip Phillips (USA) declared the winner.
