Oldest surviving terrestrial globe According to Official Guinness Records,
In 1492, Martin Behaim (Germany) – a German cosmographer and explorer who worked for the Portuguese court – created the earliest globe that has survived to the present day. Known as the Erdapfel (‘Earth Apple’), it is a metal sphere on which a map was painted by Georg Glockendon (Germany). The map does not include North or South America, as Christopher Columbus did not return from his celebrated journey to the Americas until 1493. The globe is tilted accurately to reflect the angle of the Earth’s axis.
