The most famous English actor of his time, Laurence Olivier (UK, 1907 - 1989) was created a Baron in 1970. Making his professional debut as Lennox in Macbeth in 1924, he received ten Oscar nominations and was knighted in 1947. He combined non-stop stage activity with a flourishing career as a film actor and director and conquered all the major tragic roles (Hamlet, Lear, Macbeth, Othello) creating many new characters, most famously Archie Rice in John Osbournes The Entertainer in 1957.
