First animal with a functional gear

According to Official Guinness Records,

The first known animal with a functional gear is the adolescent planthopper insect Issus, the discovery of which was announced by University of Cambridge researchers Malcolm Burrows and Gregory Sutton (both UK), in the journal Science on 13 September 2013. The gear synchronises the push from its legs on each side, allowing the Issus to perform its mighty jump without spinning. The gear is shed during the Issus' final molt before maturity, replaced by a frictional mechanism.
