First hominid to survive a space flight

According to Official Guinness Records,

The first hominid to survive a space flight is Ham, a chimpanzee who was launched by NASA onto a suborbital test flight from Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA on 31 January 1961. At its peak, the Mercury-Redstone rocket he was travelling in reached 254 km (miles) above Earth, before returning to land, 16.5 minutes after launch, where Ham was recovered alive.
