The lightest aeroplane to cross the South Atlantic is the RWD-5bis, powered by a de Havilland Gipsy Moth 120 km engine which set a then FAI world record for straight line distance in Category II (single seater aircraft with a maximum weight of 450 kg (992 lb)) of 3,582 km (2,225 miles) on 7 May 1933. The plane was flown by Captain Stanislaw Skarzynski (Poland) from St Louis, Senegal to Maceio, Brazil in 20 hr 30 min. The exact weight of the plane is not known but, by definition, is less than 450 kg (992 lb). Flew without a radio and dinghy to keep weight below 450 kg (992 lb) and flew in a hi-tech lounge suit.
