According to Official Guinness Records,

The smallest independent country in the world is the State of the Vatican City or Holy See (Stato della Città del Vaticano), an enclave within the city of Rome, Italy. Its sovereignty was recognised by the Italian government under the terms of the Lateran Treaty on 11 February 1929. The enclave has an area of 0.44 km² (0.17 miles²).Pic: Alamy
