    The United Nations General Assembly, in a resolution adopted designated June 16 as International Day of Solidarity with the Struggling People of South Africa to commemorate the Soweto massacre in South Africa. The day was celebrated annually until the end of apartheid.
  • International Day of Family Remittances:

    The UN has declared 16 June as the International Day of Family Remittances aiming "to raise awareness of the importance of migrants transferring money home towards global development and the role they play in the $600-billion remittance market".
