The fastest time to sail around Great Britain and Ireland in a 40-ft-or-under sailboat is 8 days 4 hr 14 min and 49 sec, achieved by skipper Phil Sharp (UK) and crew members Julien Pulvé (France), Pablo Santurdé (Spain) and Sam Matson (UK) aboard the offshore Class 40 yacht Imerys Clean Energy. The team set off on 12 August 2018 at 11:00 UTC and crossed the finishing line in Cowes, Isle of Wight, UK, on 20 August at 15:14:19 UTC, having achieved an average speed of 9.03 knots over the 1,773-nautical mile route. The speed record was ratified by the World Sailing Speed Record Council.The previous record time of 8 days 19 hr 6 min 49 sec was set by Roderick Knowles (UK) aboard "Swish” in August 2014.The record was set at the 2018 Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race, first organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) in 1995. The quadrennial race is regarded as one of the toughest of all yacht races, as it poses major navigational challenges all around the UK in the notorious British weather.
