The USA won a record 83 gold medals at the XXIIIrd Olympic Games held at Los Angeles, California, USA in 1984. The USSR lies in second place with a total of 80 gold medals won at the 1980 Games held in Moscow, USSR. Third place goes to the USA, whose athletes picked up 78 gold medals at the 1904 Games in St Louis, Louisiana, USA.
